Rhinoplasty (Nose Surgery)

  • Rhinoplasty (Nose Surgery)

Rhinoplasty, commonly known as a nose job, is a cosmetic or functional surgical procedure designed to reshape the nose for aesthetic enhancement or to improve breathing. The surgery can address concerns such as nose size, shape, asymmetry, nasal humps, and breathing difficulties caused by structural issues.

Procedure

Rhinoplasty can be performed using two main techniques:

  • Open Rhinoplasty – An incision is made across the columella (the tissue between the nostrils) for better access to nasal structures.
  • Closed Rhinoplasty – All incisions are made inside the nostrils, leaving no visible scars.

Depending on the patient’s needs, the procedure may involve:

  • Reducing or reshaping cartilage and bone
  • Augmenting the nose with grafts
  • Straightening a deviated septum (septoplasty) for improved breathing

Recovery

Proper post-operative care is crucial to achieving the best results. Patients should follow these guidelines to ensure smooth healing and avoid complications.

Rhinoplasty Surgery Instructions

  • Nasal Splint: Wear for 7-10 days to support the nose and reduce swelling.
  • Swelling & Bruising: Expect swelling around the nose and eyes, which may take several weeks to subside.
  • Avoid Blowing Nose: For 2-3 weeks to prevent complications. Use saline spray as advised.
  • Sleeping Position: Sleep with your head elevated for at least 2 weeks to reduce swelling.
  • Avoid Heavy Physical Activity: No intense exercise for 4 weeks; light walking is encouraged.
  • Avoid Alcohol & Smoking: For 2 weeks to promote healing.
  • Avoid Sun & Sunbeds: For 2 months to prevent skin discoloration and protect sensitive tissue.
  • Glasses & Sunglasses: Avoid wearing for 4-6 weeks to prevent pressure on the nose.
  • Showering: Keep the nasal splint dry; wash your face gently with a damp cloth.
  • Skin Care: Use mild cleansers and avoid aggressive rubbing.
  • Scar Treatment: If open rhinoplasty was performed, start scar cream after 10 days.

By following these post-operative instructions, patients can ensure a smooth recovery and achieve optimal results. Always adhere to your surgeon’s specific recommendations.
